Cleaning & restoration of Oriental rugs

A hand-knotted rug cannot be cleaned like a fitted carpet. Discover our results in pictures, every stage of our process, how we work and how we prepare your quote.

Craftsmanship, one gesture at a time

Reknotting the pile, rebuilding the warp, re-weaving worn areas and selvedges: everything is done by hand, with wools chosen for each rug.

Cleaning

Rug cleaning: our process, step by step

Our washing is done entirely by hand, in ten successive cycles: it takes time, but it is what cleans a rug to the very heart of its weave while preserving its colours.

Washed by hand, with water, at the workshop.
  1. Diagnosis and colour test

We identify the material (wool, silk, cotton), the origin and the condition of the rug, then carry out a dye test on every colour before it comes into contact with water.

  2. Dusting and spot treatment

We draw out the dust and sand lodged in the knots from the back of the rug, then treat each stain individually, with a product suited to the fibre.

  3. Soaking in seawater

The rug is soaked in seawater: the salt helps to fix the colours.

  4. Hand brushing

It is then brushed by hand in clear water, in the direction of the pile. No machines, no harsh products.

  5. Natural drying, laid flat

The rug dries flat in the open air for as long as it needs: drying it too quickly would damage the fibres and the colours.

  6. Ten complete cycles

Soaking, brushing, drying: the whole process is repeated ten times to clean deep inside the weave. This is why it takes two to three months.

  7. Moth treatment, restoration and finishing

Once clean, the rug receives a moth treatment, followed by any restoration and re-dyeing it needs. After its fringes are combed and a final inspection is carried out, it is rolled and wrapped for its return.

Restoration

Rug restoration: repairing without altering

Holes, wear, burns, moth damage, damaged fringes or selvedges: we restore in keeping with the original technique, so that the repair is as discreet as possible.

Restorations guaranteed for 10 years. If a restored area comes undone, we will redo it free of charge. Guarantee terms

  • Holes and tears — full re-weaving
  • Worn and bare areas — reknotting of the pile
  • Moth damage — treatment, then repair
  • Faded colours — re-dyeing in the original shade
  • Fringes and selvedges — strengthened or remade
  • Tapestries — consolidation and lining
  1. Examination and assessment

We examine the piece, photograph every damaged area and explain what can be done — and what should not be.

  2. Choice of materials

Wools and silks are selected and, where necessary, dyed to match the exact shade of the rug, patina included.

  3. Strengthening the structure

Before redoing the pile, we rebuild the warp and weft: this is what ensures a sound, lasting repair.

  4. Re-weaving knot by knot

Holes and worn areas are re-woven by hand, respecting the original knot type and knot density.

  5. Selvedges and fringes

The selvedges (side cords) are re-overcast and the fringes strengthened or remade to stop any fraying.

  6. Shearing and blending in

The restored pile is sheared to the same height as the rest of the rug so that the repair blends into the whole.

Pricing: how we calculate your quote

Every rug is different, which is why we never charge a flat rate. Here is what we take into account.

Size

Washing is priced per square metre, measured without the fringes.

Material

Wool, silk, cotton or a blend: silk calls for more time and greater care.

Fineness

The higher the knot density, the more painstaking the work, especially for restoration.

Condition and stains

Heavy soiling, stains, odours or a moth treatment add extra steps.

Restoration time

A repair is priced according to the craftsman's time required and the materials to be dyed.

Collection

Depending on your address and the number of pieces, collection and delivery may be included or charged separately.

Washing

Priced per square metre, according to the material and the degree of soiling. Specific treatments (stain removal, moth treatment, odours) are listed separately on the quote.

Restoration

Priced after examination, according to the area to be repaired, the fineness of the rug and the craftsman's time required. We will also tell you when a restoration is not worthwhile.

I am astonished by the quality of the restoration carried out on my tapestry. The colours were matched with surgical precision. It is rare to find such meticulous craftsmen in France these days. The result is simply magnificent: my piece has regained its former splendour.

Frequently asked questions

Cleaning & restoration: your questions

How long does a wash take?

Allow at least two to three months: the rug is soaked in seawater, brushed by hand and dried flat, and this cycle is repeated ten times to clean it to the very heart of its weave. We give you the return date when we collect it.

Could the colours of my rug run?

We test every colour before washing and adapt our method accordingly. This is one of the main advantages of washing by hand.

Can a silk rug be washed?

Yes, with a specific, gentler method decided after diagnosis. Silk is more fragile in water than wool.

Will a restoration be visible?

Our aim is for it to blend into the rug: wools dyed to the right shade, the same knot, the same density, and pile sheared to the same height.

Do I need to come to the workshop?

No, our premises are not open to the public. We collect your rug from your home and bring it back, by appointment.
